Science of Coffee started whilst standing on top of a cold dune at sunrise in the Algerian Sahara. I took a sip of my coffee and three things went through my head:
1. This coffee is c..p
2. I should do something about the value chain inequality
3. I should put some shoes on
What hit me that morning was not only the bad cup of commercial coffee, but also a mass of irony. I knew the growers and the region that this particular bean was from, unfortunately, the label and pretty certification stamp accompanying it certainly did not match my mental picture.
Science of Coffee was born out of a passion for coffee and science. This passion is not just limited to taste, but extends to the farmers, their livelihoods and this future in the tropics. We work on the ground with the plant and the farmer. We work along the value chain with the traders, the buyers, the markets and the end-user. We are obsessively immersed in the science of growing, roasting and cupping coffee to perfection.
